Pietersite is variety of Chalcedony considered a relation of Tiger Eye. Unlike Tiger eye which is a macrocrystalline Quartz variety Pietersite is a Chalcedony with a mixture of Quartz & Mogonite embedded with Amphibole fibers of Riebeckite in the form of Crocidolite. It has similar properties as Tiger's Eye but with different patterns due to its brecciated formation.
The fibrous structure in Pietersite is brecciated through geological processes. Once broken the fibrous materials have then been naturally reformed by Quartz. All fibrous Pietersite has superb chatoyancy, it can form in swirls, swathes & fibrous segments. The different appearances in colour of Pietersite is due to the dense or sparse Crocidolite inclusions & varying degrees of alteration.
Pietersite was named after Sid Pieters whom discovered the mineral in Namibia Africa in 1962. Currently there is only one known sources of Pietersite. A very similar mineral was found in China. However this material consists of a different type of Amphibole Torendrikite, a Magnesio-Riebeckite. It is not recognised as Pietersite in the minerology world however it is sold as Pietersite.
This variety is said to have been discovered in 1993 & has slightly different variations in colour & patterns to the African Pietersite. Its colours are primarily golden or bronze & can also be found in blue shades. African Pietersite is very sought after due to its wide range of colours, including various blues, golds & reds. Blue is the rarest colour, followed by red.
Sidpietersite is a different Sulfate mineral also from Namibia it is sometimes incorrectly sold as Pietersite but does not display the same vibrant chatoyancy & is very soft with a hardness similar to Gypsum. Another possible confusion is with the Phosphate mineral Petersite from New Jersey, USA, a member of the Mixite group.
