Natural Citrine is rare. Citrine is a transparent yellow variety of Quartz. Ranging in colour from pale to golden yellow, honey or almost brown & may contain rainbows or mineral inclusions. The name comes from the French word citron meaning lemon. It was used as a gem in ancient Greece as far back as 300 B.C.
Much of the commercial Citrine on the market is heat-treated Amethyst that produces an enhanced Citrine colour, usually a deeper amber or orange-reddish shade. Genuine Citrine will loose its colour & turn white when heating to more than 200°C. The yellow colour will occur again when irradiated with x- or gamma-rays.
Most natural Citrine is a pale yellow colour. Citrine’s colour is caused by irradiation & colourising agents that are built into the crystal lattice. Colour is not caused by inclusions of other minerals although it can contain traces of aluminium. Citrine’s can have a Smokey colour, this is said to be due to the balance of Aluminium & Lithium. Less Lithium content creates more yellow, higher Lithium content creates darker black colours or Smokey Quartz. Smokey Citrine’s can be faked by gently heating yellowish Smokey Quartz. The smokey colour disappears before the yellow as the colour centres in Citrine are more stable.
