The name Campo del Cielo Meteorite refers to a group of Iron Meteorites located 1,000 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The crater field contains at least 26 craters & covers an area of 3×20 kilometers. The largest crater is 115×91 meters.
These craters & surrounding areas contain numerous fragments of an Iron meteorite. The total weight of the pieces recovered exceeds 100 tones. This Meteorite is the heaviest one ever recovered on Earth. The largest fragment is 37 tones & is the second heaviest single-piece Meteorite recovered, after the Hoba Meteorite.
These craters are considered to have an unusual distribution which suggests that a large body entered the Earth's atmosphere & broke into pieces as it fell to the ground. The size of the main body is estimated to be larger than 4 meters in diameter. The disintegration of the original Meteorite may have been due to the unusually high density of inclusions found within the Iron Meteorites.
Samples of charred wood were extracted from beneath the Meteorite fragments then analysed for Carbon-14 composition. The results indicate the date of the fall to be around 4,200–4,700 years ago around 2,200–2,700 BC. Average composition of the Campo del Cielo Meteorites is 6.67% Ni, 0.43% Co, 0.25% P, 87 ppm Ga, 407 ppm Ge, and 3.6 ppm Ir, with the rest being Iron.
The Iron masses within these craters were reported in 1576. However they were already known by the aboriginal inhabitants, whom named the area Piguem Nonralta which the Spanish translated as Campo del Cielo & means Field of Heaven.
