Prehnite was named for the Dutch military forces commander Colonel Hendrik Von Prehn (1733–1785) who first located the mineral near the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa.
Prehnite forms when hot, circulating solutions leach minerals from surrounding rocks & deposit them in veins or cavities in igneous rocks. This mineral can develop a radiating crystal structure & forms complete individual spheres given the right conditions. The radiating crystal structure also gives Prehnite a cat’s-eye effect when cut into cabochons or faceted gems.
Formation in a tabular, botryoidal or stalactite deposits have also been found. Prehnite can occur with inclusions of “flowers” or “suns” of Natrolite & also tourmalinated. Often incorrectly labeled as Jade, Prehnite is sometimes incorrectly sold as Jade or New Jade.
Extensive deposits of gem quality Prehnite occur in the basalt tablelands in Northern Territory, Australia.Australian Prehnite ranges in colour from almost grey, pale green to dark oily green & a range of yellow colours. Prehnite is also found in South Africa, China, Scotland and the USA.
